GIS expert Julie Spangler, GISP, will present the top ten (10) considerations for leveraging online GIS tools to better serve your organization, your citizens, and your public officials. The use of “easy-to-build” story maps and dashboards will be presented to show how your agency’s seemingly bland infrastructure information can be brought to life and made accessible to your agency’s stakeholders via dynamic, online, geocentric data visualization tools. How to effectively present multi-year capital improvement plans (CIPs) and the impacts of different funding levels on sidewalk, pedestrian ramp, and pavement conditions will be illustrated via real-world examples.  Gone are the days of hard-copy reports and mysterious spreadsheets: Today’s asset management leaders must be transparent in presenting their agency’s data using accessible, easy-to-understand, and geocentric platforms!

With the ever-changing landscape of “new-and-improved" hardware and software technologies and industry buzz words, it is challenging to determine if a data collection method will yield the results that support your agency’s needs. Presenter Kurt Keifer, PhD, PE will highlight common data collection technologies that are available for right-of-way (ROW) asset and pavement management. Several different artificial intelligence (AI) methods, ROW cameras, lidar systems, pavement scanning, and other data acquisition systems will be presented. The primary focus of the discussion, however, will be how to best match the right technology to your business needs to ensure that the data you receive is relevant, manageable, and repeatable for asset management.

To say that significant developments in pavement data collection technologies and artificial intelligence (AI) based processing methods have taken place over the past three years is an understatement. Industry standards have not kept pace with technological advancements and agencies attempting to procure these services have been left in a bind. While these technologies may provide better data than previous technologies, it is critical that agencies understand the benefits and limitations of these technologies -- especially those implementing AI -- and how best to procure the technologies. AI is a tool, not a panacea. In this presentation, Kurt Keifer, PhD, PE will describe the benefits and limitation of 3D pavement imaging, AI-based data processing, and mobile LiDAR technologies. The attendees will learn how best to integrate data collected with these technologies into their pavement and asset management systems. Attendees will also learn how best to procure and QC/QA the data from these technologies.
