Technical Writer

IMS is a growing pavement analysis company with operations across North America. For more than 30 years, we have used high-tech equipment to scan streets, sidewalks, and other road-related assets for city and county governments.

We are looking for an extremely talented, growth-oriented writer to join our expanding team. IMS is made up of engineers, data analysts, GIS experts, marketers, field technicians, and others who are passionate about helping cities and counties make intelligent decisions about their most valuable assets. We are in need of a phenomenal writer who can translate the technical work we do into helpful, understandable, and actionable language for our clients via reports, marketing materials, and other publications. A technical writer who loves to learn, engage with technical types, interview experts, craft compelling written work, and be challenged on a daily basis is exactly who we are looking for. Candidate Competencies

Job Responsibilities:

  • To deliver high quality client reports that effectively explain and summarize data and analysis for our clients.
  • To write compelling, informative, and creative content for our marketing team that produces client interest.
  • To manage the creation of a suite of marketing materials on an ongoing basis, including case studies and whitepapers that require interviews with clients and other experts.
  • To stay abreast of technical developments in the infrastructure management industry and grasp new materials in a way that allows for simplified explanations and summaries.

Job Activities:

  • Assemble and finalize reports for clients without any meaningful mistakes.
  • Compose reports for up to 200 clients per year.
  • Make incremental improvements to the IMS report design, structure, and content to ensure steadily increasing effectiveness.
  • Update reports in response to new technology, equipment, and process that IMS develops or acquires.
  • Write a consistent amount of new marketing content to be used on websites, social media, blogs, newsletters, and other marketing efforts.
  • Ensure a strong, unified voice for IMS with a balance of technical knowledge and digestible prose.
  • Receive feedback and update content accordingly.
  • Compose and finalize at least 2 new case studies or whitepapers per month.
  • Ensure that in each writing product there is original content from clients, employees, and/or technical experts.
  • Consult with marketing team and engineering team members to ensure relevance and accuracy of content.
  • Read industry publications and engage with ongoing education on a regular basis to hone learnings.
  • Attend at least one technical conference per year to learn about the latest developments in our industry.
  • Publish at least one article per year in an industry trade journal or technical publication.

Requirements / Preferences:

  • Excellent written language abilities with comfort using multiple voices depending on the venue.
  • Experience writing social media content for SEO / SEM impact or social engagement.
  • Experience producing polished, professional-grade marketing pieces for widespread use.
  • Comfort preparing for and conducting informational interviews with individuals from a variety of backgrounds.
  • Background creating content with input from a variety of stakeholders.
  • Capable of summarizing and simplifying complex ideas for general, non-technical consumption.
  • Able to learn about, understand, and synthesize new learnings in a technical area.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • College-level coursework in a technical or writing-related field.
